Thanks for the Lost Trail updates. I've had some great spring skiing this year. Two weekends ago Killington shifted gears from Winter to Spring with what seemed like the flick of a switch. I had two great days of big soft bumps, temps in the 40's and 50's and sunny skies. On Sat it was partially sunny and temps in the 40's. The snow was getting softer every run throughout the day. I was skiing with some intermediate skiers (don't tell them that) and entertained myself by doing top to bottom runs on one ski. We were sticking to groomers around Rams Head and Snow Shed. On Sunday I met up with another housemate and we searched out the bumps. We were at Bear Mountain doing runs on Outer Limits, Wildfire and then moved over to Needles Eye under the lift and Vertigo next to Needles Eye. The bumps were fantastic. I was skiing in a thin wool baselayer top and standard issue gortex pants.
Last weekend I skied on Saturday. Killington lost a lot of snow over the week. They didn't get as much rain as expected but it stayed warm all week. Sat morning started pretty wet and cloud covered. It was hard to tell when the fog stopped and drizzle started. Visibility was about 5-10 feet at the top and maybe 50 feet at the bottom. I was with a snowboarder who took one run down O.L. and spent the next hour complaining about how he was wet and underdressed and basically unhappy with the conditions. We went in for a break at around 11 AM and he actually convinced me to drive from KBL to Bear Mountain. It was actually the first time I drove to Bear this year and I forgot how far it is from the Killington Road. Anyway Bear is south facing and visibility improved so that you could see half way up the mountain. John (snowboarder) decided to drink beer during and after lunch. I hit the slopes around 12:30 and found great soft conditions. Outer Limits had larger, steeper bump runs top to bottom. The lines broke up a few times. The more aggressive/faster skiers could jump from line to line to connect them. I seemed to turn a lot more than many of the bump/racers and used the break in the line as a resting spot. Anyway after my first run (after lunch) a woman in her early 40's named Dotti picked me up in the lift line and we ended up skiing for the next hour. She has a 2 and 4 year old and takes turns watching the kids with her husband (former world cup racer from 91 - whose name I forget). Anyway, we had very similar skiing style and level and pushed each other through the various runs. We started on Wild fire, moved to Outer Limits and didn another run under the Bear quad called the Golf Course and then fed out to O.L. She 's been skiing at Killington for 15 years and was a great guide.
I converted my ME tickets into a spring All-East pass so I plan on skiing as many weekends as possible for the rest of the season.
Talk to you soon,
D
