Bristol Cliffs Wilderness Area Hike, Vermont
August 1995

In August of 1995, Tom, Greg, and I went to hike the cliffs we had seen on the south end of the Hogback Range near Bristol, Vermont. It turns out that these cliffs are part of the smallest wilderness area in Vermont, the Bristol Cliffs Wilderness which currently has a total of 3,738 acres. It's actually one of six wilderness areas in Vermont, and you can take a look at all of them on the map below. If you'd like more information about any of Vermont's wilderness areas, just click on the map and it will bring you to the Vermont section of wilderness.net where you will find an interactive version of the map.

While we were on route 17 looking for a place to park, we encountered this interesting rock along the side of the road. It's known as "Bristol Rock" or sometimes "The Lord's Prayer Rock". The most common story behind it involves the hauling of logs down from the mountains to the Bristol sawmill. After an arduous journey, it was a relief to finally reach the level road near the rock, and a prayer was said for making it down safely. You can find more information about the rock here.
